Using AI to respond to every customer review

In a recent webinar, “How to use AI to respond to every review without the risk”, Rosie Davenport, Senior Director of Product Marketing, sat down with Morrissey Balsamides, Senior Data and AI Product Manager, to introduce Alchemer’s newest feature: the AI Auto-Responder.  

Morrissey walked through a live demo of the feature and shared practical advice for teams ready to stop leaving reviews unanswered and customer voices unheard. Here are some of the key themes from their conversation:  

1. Every unanswered review is a missed opportunity  

It’s easy to treat review responses as something to do “when we have time”. Morrissey made the case that they’re anything but that. Responding consistently improves local search rankings, increases brand visibility, and gives dissatisfied customers a reason to change their rating. The challenge for most teams is handling high volumes of reviews.  

“Users and customers expect a review response within 24 hours. It’s not always possible to do if you’re getting a tremendous amount of reviews on a daily basis.” 

And the clock doesn’t stop: “Having AI do that for you, it’s going to allow people to feel heard and potentially change their overall star rating from a negative experience to a positive one.” 

2. AI automation doesn’t mean losing control 

A big theme of the webinar was trust. The Auto-Responder lets teams define exactly which reviews get an automated response — by star rating, platform, or whether the review includes text.  

Critically, it integrates with Alchemer’s Risk Monitoring feature, which flags reviews that could carry legal or PR risk. Those get excluded automatically, so the AI only touches what it’s safe to touch. As Morrissey put it, the goal is to give teams “something convenient, but also having the guardrails in-place to feel confident with the automation.” 

Rosie, speaking from a marketer’s perspective, summed up what most teams are really looking for: “I want a tool to help me respond to reviews. I really want to make sure it’s safe. And I want to improve my SEO and keep my brand voice at the same time.” 

3. Don’t lose your brands distinct voice and tone 

The AI Auto-Responder goes beyond generic responses and learns from your previous review replies over time, picking up on tone, signature phrases, and even patterns like including a contact number for negative experiences. “If you have a little signature that you like to do, if you like to use a lot of exclamation points, the AI model is going to understand that and respond in kind based upon those previous examples.” That contextual learning is also why the acceptance rate is so high.  

By the time teams turn on full automation, the AI has often already been quietly studying how they write like your brand. As Morrissey noted, every response — regardless of star rating or whether the review has text — “is always going to pull in that brand voice.” 

4. Start small, build confidence, then scale  

Morrissey’s recommended entry point: automate responses to four- and five-star reviews with no text first. “A human jumping in there, they’re not going to be able to add a lot more context — so having the AI completely automate those is a perfect way to start with full automation.”  

From there, teams can expand the rules as comfort grows. And if your brand voice evolves over time? “It will change as you evolve your brand voice automatically, without the need for any interruption via human.” The proof point that tends to win people over: 92% of AI-generated responses are accepted by users without any edits.
